Jazz Combo Description ~ MU0525
The Drury High School Jazz Combo is a select group of instrumentalists with flexible instrumentation. Ideally two combos are organized, consisting of two complete rhythm sections (Piano, Bass, Guitar and Drums). Various wind players are assigned to one of the groups based on experience and balancing the two ensembles. Jazz Combo members will be chosen from the students in Concert Band with some exceptions (vocalists, guitar, and piano) where those instruments are needed but are not represented in the concert band. The Jazz Combo rehearses one evening a week as well as before-school or after-school sectionals.
The primary goal of the ensemble is to provide the knowledge and experiences which will develop the ability of the student to express themselves through jazz and to perceive the arts at increasingly deeper levels of meaning.
Only by participating in a Jazz Combo can we experience the creative and cultural phenomenon that is jazz. Jazz, which has often been called the only true American Art Form, is an important part of our cultural heritage and an important vehicle to understanding the roots of rock ‘n roll and the entire black experience. Hands-on experiences with jazz, as a member of a Jazz Combo, provide the best way to learn and understand this significant aspect of our national culture.
