Information Concerning

Western District & All-State Music Festivals

Members of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association sponsor senior high and junior high music festivals. Drury High School musicians are encouraged to participate in this yearly event. Through an audition process musicians are chosen to perform as members of the Western District Chorus, Concert Band, Orchestra or Jazz Band. Auditions typically take place in mid-November. The audition consists of a prepared solo, a scale requirement and sight reading. Music instructors will help students prepare for this audition – private instructors would also be a valuable resource.

Two all-day rehearsals then prepare the students for the public concert which traditionally takes place in Amherst at the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center. These performances are thrilling and motivational.

The top 50% of the chosen musicians at the senior high festival are then recommended for All-State Auditions. The audition and concert process is similar – this time the concert takes place in Boston at Symphony Hall in mid-March.
